Best AI interview software for Australian care and health hiring in 2026

Updated August 2026

If you are hiring carers, support workers or nurses at volume in Australia, the shortlist is smaller than the category makes it look. Most tools sold as "AI interviewing" are doing one of four different jobs, and picking the wrong one is how teams end up paying for a product that never touches the problem they had.

This covers nine tools, what each actually does, what it costs where that is public, and one real limitation for each.

The short version, for the job named in the title: if you need to hear a candidate answer a question and then answer the follow-up to that answer, at volume, Ployo is the only tool here that does it on video. One other does it on audio. Seven of the other eight cannot hold a live two-way conversation at all, by design. That is not a marketing claim, it is what their own product pages say, and the section below sets it out tool by tool.

I build Ployo, so weigh that. It also loses outright on two things further down, and I have said where.

An aged care worker in scrubs at a kitchen table, mid-answer and gesturing, talking to an interviewer seen from behind in the foreground
The second question is where a first round earns its keep. What someone says when you ask them to expand on an answer is the part a CV cannot tell you, and it is the thing most of this category is not built to do.

What does AI interview software actually mean in 2026?

Four different things, sold under one phrase.

Chat and SMS screening. The candidate types. The system asks knockout questions, answers their questions back, and books a time. Fast, cheap, and it never hears anyone speak.

One-way recorded video. The candidate records answers to fixed questions on their own schedule. Nobody is on the other end. AI transcribes and scores afterwards. This is the format most people picture when they hear "AI interview", and it is the oldest.

Live AI interviewers. A real-time two-way conversation. The AI asks, listens, and asks a follow-up based on what it just heard. This is the newest layer and the one where the differences between vendors are widest.

Assessments and skills tests. Not interviews at all. Complementary, and worth keeping separate in your head.

For frontline care hiring the practical question is narrower than the category: can this thing hold a conversation with someone whose English is a second language, at 9pm, without a recruiter present, and give you something defensible afterwards. That rules a lot of the market in or out immediately.

One more distinction, because vendors blur it deliberately. "Video interview" often means the candidate's camera is on while the AI side is audio only. That is not the same as an AI that presents visually, and it is not the same as a recorded video with nobody on the other end. Every entry below states which it is.

Which of these can actually ask a follow-up question?

This is the dividing line in the category, and it is the one thing a vendor page will never put in a table. A follow-up requires something listening in real time. Everything else is a form with better production values.

Two out of nine today, with the largest incumbent building a third. If your screening problem is that a CV and a fixed question list cannot separate two candidates who look identical on paper, seven of these tools cannot solve it no matter how the demo goes, and the one that can besides Ployo does it without ever seeing the person.

ToolFollow-up?What actually happens
PloyoYes, on videoLive two-way video conversation. The next question is generated from the answer just given.
HeyMiloYes, on audioThe AI speaks and listens live. The candidate may be on camera, but the AI side is voice only.
HireVueNot yetRecorded answers scored after the fact, plus scheduled live video with a human on the other end. It acquired the technology behind Hireguide in March 2026 to build an agentic, voice-driven live interviewer, so expect this row to change.
SapiaNoText chat. Fixed behavioural questions, scored on the written answer.
ParadoxNoChat and SMS knockout questions. Candidates type.
Spark HireNoOne-way recorded video only.
WilloNoOne-way recorded video only.
VidCruiterNoIts AI scores and takes notes. It does not conduct the interview.
HumanlyNoTheir own wording describes the voice channel as pre-recorded voice messages, not a live conversation.

What do they cost?

Three of nine publish a real figure on their own site. The rest route you to a sales conversation, which is a finding in itself rather than a gap in this page.

Every figure below is what that vendor publishes, checked against their own pricing page. Where a number comes from somewhere else it says so, because an aggregator's estimate is not a price.

ToolPublished?What it costs
Spark HireYesBundled ATS plus video from $335 a month billed annually, up to 200 employees. Growth from $499 a month, up to 500. A standalone one-way video product at $299 a month.
WilloYesAn annual contract at 2,999 pounds, $3,799, 3,499 euros or A$5,749 for one year, falling to 2,699 pounds over two. Pay-as-you-go at 49 pounds, $59, 59 euros or A$95 per live role.
HireVueNoNamed tiers with no figures. Third-party buyer guides estimate roughly $35,000 to $145,000 a year plus onboarding. Those are unverified secondary estimates, not HireVue figures.
HumanlyNoNothing on their own pages. A third-party review estimates roughly $4 to $8 per candidate screened at 500 a month, which is an outside estimate.
SapiaNoPer-hire pricing quoted by sales, positioned for employers hiring 500 or more a year.
ParadoxNoEnterprise contract through sales.
VidCruiterNoFeature categories listed with no figures, and a form to fill in.
HeyMiloNoA demo form asking for monthly hires and applicant volume. Aggregator sites report per-interview figures not confirmed against a HeyMilo source.
PloyoNoContract through sales. By the standard applied to everyone else in this table, that is a mark against us.

What about Hireflix and Vervoe?

Both come up in this category and neither is covered here, because I have not checked their current pricing, modality and limitations against their own pages the way I have for the nine above. Rather than describe them from memory and get a detail wrong, I have left them out. Treat any roundup that covers a tool without checking it the same way.

How do you choose between them?

Start with the job, not the demo.

If your problem is response time and scheduling, the chat tools solve it and the interview tools do not. Paradox exists for this.

If your problem is recruiter hours spent on first-round calls, async video removes them, and Spark Hire or Willo will tell you the price today.

If your problem is that you cannot tell two candidates apart from a CV and a fixed set of recorded answers, you need something that can ask a second question. That is the live layer.

If your problem is that procurement will not sign without certifications or a published fairness audit, that decides it before anything else does. VidCruiter for the certification list, Sapia for the audit.

For Australian care and health specifically, add one filter the vendor pages will not: whatever you pick has to sit alongside the checks you already run, from AHPRA registration to NDIS worker screening to working-with-children clearances. An interview tool that scores a candidate beautifully and then hands you nothing your compliance process can use has moved the work rather than removed it. What the law actually requires, and where the line sits between AI screening and AI deciding, is set out at ployo.ai/guides/ai-interviewing-compliance-australia.

Which leaves the case this article was written about. High volume, frontline, a lot of candidates whose CVs look the same and whose English is a second language, and a decision that turns on what someone says when you ask them a second question. On that job, the shortlist is one live spoken interviewer that runs on video and one that runs on audio, and everything else on this page is solving a different problem well. That is where Ployo sits, and it is why it exists.

The nine tools, one by one

Sapia

Text chat
Who it is for
Australian enterprises hiring 500 or more people a year, especially where a legal or compliance function wants published fairness evidence before an AI touches a candidate.
What it does
A text-based chat interview. Candidates type written answers to a handful of behavioural questions and are scored on the text alone. Their own candidate explainer states there is no video recording, no camera and no voice.
Pricing
Not published. Per-hire pricing quoted by sales, positioned for employers hiring 500 or more a year.
One real limitation
It is text only, so you never hear the candidate. For roles where spoken English and phone manner are part of the job, that is a gap you have to fill somewhere else.

Melbourne-based, and the deepest Australian enterprise logo bench in this category. They commissioned an independent disparate-impact report from BLDS, LLC and published the finding. No one else here has done that, Ployo included, and no amount of careful design substitutes for a third-party audit if that is what your risk team requires.

HireVue

Async video, live line coming
Who it is for
Large enterprises with existing ATS plumbing, global footprints, or government compliance requirements.
What it does
Recorded, on-demand video interviews scored by AI after the fact, plus scheduled live video interviewing, plus separate skills tools. The recorded format is what built the name.
Pricing
Not published. Their pricing page lists Essential and Premium tiers with no dollar figures. Third-party buyer guides estimate enterprise contracts in the range of roughly $35,000 to $145,000 a year plus onboarding, but those are unverified secondary estimates, not HireVue figures.
One real limitation
The recorded format means nobody adapts to the candidate. Everyone answers the same fixed questions, so a strong candidate who misreads a question has no way back.

Where they genuinely win: enterprise integration depth. Ten named certified integrations including Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle/Taleo, iCIMS and Greenhouse, support for 40 or more languages, and FedRAMP authorization for US government hiring. That is a decade of procurement work nobody younger in this category has done.

Paradox (Olivia)

Chat and SMS
Who it is for
Very large frontline employers, particularly those already on Workday, whose real problem is scheduling and responsiveness.
What it does
A conversational assistant over chat and SMS. It screens against knockout questions, answers candidate queries and books interviews automatically. Candidates type. There is no live spoken AI interview.
Pricing
Not published. Enterprise contract through sales.
One real limitation
It is not an assessment tool. If your problem is telling two similar-looking candidates apart, this is not the layer that solves it.

Owned by Workday since October 2025. Their public case studies are about speed rather than assessment quality, and the figures they report are large: Compass Group hiring at enormous scale with a small recruiting team, 7-Eleven citing a reduction of tens of thousands of hours a week. If your bottleneck is genuinely response time, that is the right tool and this list is over for you.

Spark Hire

Async video
Who it is for
Small and medium organisations that want a price on a page and a product they can start this week.
What it does
One-way recorded video interviewing bundled with an ATS and behavioural assessments. No live or scheduled interview product appears anywhere on their site.
Pricing
Published in dollars on their own pricing page. Bundled ATS plus video from $335 a month billed annually, up to 200 employees. Growth from $499 a month, up to 500 employees, adding a behavioural assessment. A standalone one-way video product at $299 a month monthly.
One real limitation
Async recorded video only, and the tiers are banded by company size rather than hiring volume, which fits awkwardly if you are a small agency placing hundreds of people.

They publish real figures on their own site. Most of this category does not, and if a self-serve price is what you need to make a decision this quarter, that is a genuine advantage rather than a footnote.

Ployo

Live video
Who it is for
High-volume frontline hiring where you need to hear the candidate speak, at a volume where calling every applicant stopped being realistic.
What it does
A live AI interviewer conducting a real-time two-way video conversation. It asks a follow-up based on the answer it just heard rather than reading a fixed list, then returns a recording, a transcript and a per-requirement score. 30,000+ AI interviews completed across 23 languages.
Pricing
Not published. Contract through sales, which by the standard applied to everyone else on this list is a mark against us.
One real limitation
No independent disparate-impact audit has been commissioned or published. Sapia has one. If your compliance function requires third-party fairness evidence as a condition of purchase, that is a real reason to choose them over us today.

The thing it does that the async tools structurally cannot: follow up. A recorded interview cannot ask \"you said you covered nights at that facility, was that on your own or with a second carer\" because nobody is listening when the answer arrives. In care hiring that second question is usually the whole interview. It is the difference between a candidate who has held a shift alone and one who has watched someone else hold it, and a CV will not tell you which you have. Every other tool on this list either takes that question away from you or hands it back to a recruiter at 200 candidates a week. Do not take my word for any of that: there is a real interview excerpt at ployo.ai/sample, no form and no gate, so you can judge the follow-up claim yourself in about two minutes. Company page: linkedin.com/company/ployoai.

Willo

Async video
Who it is for
High-growth and high-volume teams that want exact pricing and a fast setup, without an enterprise sales cycle.
What it does
One-way asynchronous recorded video interviewing built around a recruiter-defined evaluation blueprint. Candidates record anywhere, any time, on any device. No live interview product exists on their site.
Pricing
Published in full, in four currencies. An annual contract at 2,999 pounds, $3,799, 3,499 euros or A$5,749 for one year, falling to 2,699 pounds over two years, plus a pay-as-you-go option at 49 pounds, $59, 59 euros or A$95 per live role.
One real limitation
Async only, so the same no-follow-up ceiling applies. The monthly tiers that used to exist are gone, so the entry point is now an annual commitment or per-role pricing.

Glasgow-founded, and one of very few vendors here quoting an Australian dollar price outright.

VidCruiter

Async and live video, AI scores only
Who it is for
Enterprise and public sector buyers whose procurement process has a certification checklist.
What it does
Pre-recorded and live video interviewing as separate products, plus scheduling, automated reference checks, skills testing and video proctoring. Its AI features score and take notes rather than conduct the interview.
Pricing
Not published. The pricing page lists feature categories with no figures and asks for a form submission.
One real limitation
The AI does not conduct the conversation, so if you came looking for an autonomous interviewer this is a different product than the name suggests.

Compliance depth that nothing else here comes close to: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 27017 and ISO 27018, plus GDPR, PIPEDA, CCPA, VPAT and TX-RAMP alignment. If your legal team requires that list, this is your shortlist of one.

Humanly

Chat, SMS and async video
Who it is for
Hourly and frontline employers who want one vendor across engagement, screening, interviewing and retention.
What it does
Chat and SMS screening by default, plus automated phone screening and async video, assembled from three 2025 acquisitions. Their own language describes the voice channel as pre-recorded voice messages rather than a live conversation.
Pricing
Not published on their own pages. A third-party review estimates roughly $4 to $8 per candidate screened at 500 candidates a month, which is an outside estimate rather than a Humanly figure.
One real limitation
It is a rollup, and rollups take time to feel like one product. The voice layer is not a live interviewer.

The breadth is real, though. If you would rather manage one vendor across the whole hourly funnel than four, that is a legitimate reason to pick them over any point solution here.

HeyMilo AI

Live audio
Who it is for
Agencies and high-volume employers who want evidence before they buy.
What it does
Structured voice, video, SMS and form-based interviews around the clock, syncing scored results to the ATS. Voice-only on the AI side: in the video format the candidate is on camera while the AI remains audio.
Pricing
Not published on their site. The pricing page is a demo form asking for monthly hires and applicant volume. Aggregator sites report per-interview figures that are not confirmed against a HeyMilo source.
One real limitation
The AI itself is audio only, so if seeing the candidate matters to your hiring managers, you are getting a recording rather than a two-way visual conversation.

They publish named, numeric case studies, which is more third-party-checkable evidence than most vendors in this category show. Their reported figures include 4x more placements and 82% faster time to hire at Wilson, and 20x more candidates reviewed at Intershop.

WHAT THE RECRUITER RECEIVES

Ployo shortlist: candidates ranked by score, with a per-dimension scorecard and the must-have verdict cited from the interview transcript
What a recruiter actually receives: candidates ranked, each score broken out by dimension, and every must-have marked met or not met against what the candidate said on the call.

Every vendor claim above was checked against that vendor's own public pages, most recently between 5 and 21 August 2026. Pricing changes often in this category, so verify the figure before you budget against it. Where a vendor does not publish pricing, this article says so rather than repeating an aggregator's guess as fact.
